But before we begin with our look at Valentine's Day 2017, here's a short video about the history of what has become known as the most romantic day of the year.
Now, on to the business at hand...
Let’s start with a few romantic getaways being offered by several of our local hotels. Some are fancy and some are more intimate, but all can be combined with a nice romantic walk along the boardwalk or the beach.
So let’s take a look…
The Inn at Canal Square (Lewes)
Already one of the most romantic hotels in coastal Delaware, the Inn at Canal Square is offering their “Vintage Valentine Escape” for 2017. There are actually two packages to choose from and each include a two-night stay in the heart of Lewes, on the shores of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. The “Vintage Valentine Escape” package includes chocolates and champagne, while the “Spoil Someone Special” version also includes a fruit and cheese tray, a $75 dining certificate and a one-hour massage. Call 302-644-3377 for more information.
The Bellmoor Inn & Spa (Rehoboth Beach)
One of coastal Delaware’s most prestigious properties, the Bellmoor is offering a “Valentine’s Getaway Package” for 2017. This is for one night only, which of course is Tuesday, Feb. 14. With this package, the Bellmoor is making the price of a suite the same as staying in a regular room, so that’s definitely something worth taking advantage of. Or, for an added fee, the hotel will also provide you with an order of handcrafted chocolate truffles, some sparkling wine, champagne flutes and a long stemmed rose. How’s that for a special Valentine’s Day? Call 302-227-5800 for more information.
The Avenue Inn (Rehoboth Beach)
Combine a stay at the Avenue Inn with a trip to the nearby Henlopen City Oyster House to create a truly memorable Valentine’s Day experience. This “Wine & Dine Special” includes a “Coastal Choice King Suite” at the hotel, which also comes with an electric fireplace for a cozy atmosphere on Valentine’s Day. The hotel does require a three-night stay with this package, however.
Boardwalk Plaza Hotel (Rehoboth Beach)
One of the most prestigious and highly regarded hotels in Delaware, the Boardwalk Plaza rests right on, you guessed it, the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. A stay here is always a great choice, and the hotel’s “Cozy Winter Weekend” package just makes it an even better one. The package includes a two-night stay in an oceanfront suite, a $50 gift certificate to Victoria’s Restaurant on-site, a Sherpa throw blanket and in-suite delivery of hot chocolate and dessert. And did we mention that it’s right on the beach? For more information, call 302-227-7169.
Hotel Rehoboth (Rehoboth Beach)
How about a stay at the fabulous Hotel Rehoboth, located on the Avenue, for Valentine’s Day 2017? The hotel’s “C’est Magnifique Romance Package” includes champagne, chocolates, spa discounts, dinner at a great local restaurant and a room at one of Rehoboth’s finest hotels. Restaurant choices for this package include Lupo Italian Kitchen, Blue Moon, the Cultured Pearl, Summer House and Fins. Call 302-227-4300 for more information.
Bethany Beach Ocean Suites (Bethany Beach)
If you’d prefer a stay in Bethany Beach for Valentine’s Day, this fabulous property on Bethany’s boardwalk is offering a “Seaside Romance Package” for 2017. This package includes a hot stone couple’s massage, 30 minutes in the private sauna, chocolate covered strawberries, champagne and a dozen red roses. And then there’s also the room at the beach and a romantic dinner at 99 Sea Level on-site. Call 302-539-3200 for more information.
So there are a few great hotels to choose from, and many of them do include meals at some of our fabulous local restaurants here in coastal Delaware. But we’ll also let you in on some packages being offered by restaurant owners in the area.

Okay, so we’ve given you plenty of choices when it comes to hotels, restaurants and even chocolates and flowers. Now, let’s talk about a few romantic ideas that come to mind for Valentine’s Day.
It’s obviously going to be cold outside, so that may hinder your plans a little bit. But still, a moonlit stroll on the beach is just as romantic in February as it is in July. It’s just a little chillier, that’s all.
With the weather in mind, we’ll give you a few ideas for some local romance on Valentine’s Day. And sure guys, we don’t even mind if you take credit for them yourselves.
Take a Stroll
The beach is a great idea, but far from the only place in coastal Delaware where you can take a romantic stroll with your significant other. Gordon’s Pond, James Farm, Cape Henlopen State Park, the Junction & Breakwater Trail and many others provide perfect backdrops for a nice leisurely hand-in-hand walk with your special someone.
See a Movie
Lots of choices here as well, from Midway in Rehoboth to a couple of places in Ocean City and, one of our favorites, the fabulous Clayton Theater in downtown Dagsboro.
Ride the Ferry
Grab your special someone and take a round trip excursion on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, while enjoying the sites and sounds of the Delaware Bay. You might even consider doing a couple of things on the New Jersey side once you get there. The Cape May Zoo, the WWII fire control tower and several local eateries come to mind.
Painting with a Twist, on Route 1 in Rehoboth, is offering a special “Teal for Two” painting event on Valentine’s Day, beginning at 7 p.m. Call 302-313-5769 or visit their website for more information.
Go Ice Skating
Take the short trip to the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington and lace up your skates for a romantic Valentine’s Day outing. Even if you’ve never skated before, learn together and share a few laughs. Maybe even put a few bucks in the slots while you’re there and have a romantic dinner at one of the fabulous on-site restaurants.
Take Her to Lavender Fields
The lavender might not be in bloom at this time, but trust us when we say that the ladies love this farm in Cool Spring. There’s a tea room (reservation required), a gift shop and more on site, and you can even talk a walk through the amazing labyrinth on the grounds. Click HERE to read a previous story we wrong on this amazing site.
Take a Ride in a Limousine
Okay, so this one may seem a little “prom like.” But, then again, that could be a good thing, right? There are plenty of limousine companies in the area and hiring one for the evening is never a bad idea. But on Valentine’s Day, well that’s all the better.
Take a Climb
A popular way to “pop the question” in recent years is to spell out “Will You Marry Me?” in rocks or shrubbery underneath the fire control tower at Cape Henlopen State Park, and then allowing your special someone to see it from high above. But hey, even if you proposed many years ago, the view from atop the tower is a great place to share a romantic moment.
Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride
Call Delaware Ballooning at 1-855-445-8968 and make an appointment for you and your significant other to float through the skies of Delaware. It doesn’t get much more romantic than that, even in the middle of winter. The company even offers “champagne flights,” to add to an already romantic atmosphere.
So, there you go! Regardless of what you do for Valentine’s Day 2017, we hope you’ve found this list helpful and you have a great day with your special someone.
